Ecology is the story material cycles, powered by energy flow. The invention of 'waste' overlayed one-dimensional material flows on nature's cycle of production and return. Full cost accounting and biomimicry both argued for a return to material cycling. Urbanised and industrialised landscapes provide an essential testing ground for a new 'circular logic' -- a community ecology in the service of life.
